The End of Standalone Display: Winning with Google's Demand Gen

Google Display campaigns are moving to Demand Gen. Learn what this migration means for your South African ad budget and how to prepare with Tecbot’s guide.

If you have logged into your Google Ads account recently, you may have noticed a structural shift in how visual advertising works. For nearly two decades, the standalone Google Display Network (GDN) campaign was a foundational pillar of digital media buying. Now, the paid media landscape is undergoing one of its most substantial consolidations to date: Google Display Ads officially have a new home inside Demand Gen.

At Tecbot, our goal is to strip away the technical jargon and provide clarity for South African businesses. Here is what this migration means for your advertising budget and how to navigate the changes strategically.

What Exactly is Changing?

First, let us dispel a common misconception: The Google Display Network is not disappearing. The millions of websites, apps, and video properties that make up the GDN remain fully accessible. What is changing is where and how you manage them.

Google is officially retiring the standalone "Display Campaign" type. Moving forward, GDN inventory will live within a unified, visually driven campaign ecosystem alongside:

  • YouTube (In-Stream, In-Feed, and Shorts)
  • Google Discover
  • Gmail
  • Google Maps

If you want a campaign that strictly serves on the GDN without touching YouTube or Gmail, you can still do so. When you migrate an existing Display campaign into Demand Gen, it defaults to GDN-only inventory. However, you now gain the optional flexibility to layer in other high-engagement Google channels from a single, streamlined campaign structure.

The Phased Migration Timeline

Google has outlined a clear roadmap for this transition. Whether you manage your own account or partner with an agency, these are the critical milestones:

  • Phase 1: Voluntary Migration (Live Now): Eligible advertisers have access to a dedicated in-platform migration tool. You can proactively upgrade existing standalone Display campaigns into "GDN on Demand Gen" campaigns with a few clicks.
  • Phase 2: Sunsetting New Standalone Campaigns: Later in the rollout, the ability to create new standalone Display campaigns will be removed entirely. You will still be able to access, manage, and edit existing legacy campaigns during this window.
  • Phase 3: Automatic Migration (Target: 2027): Any remaining eligible Display campaigns that have not been manually upgraded will be automatically migrated into Demand Gen by Google’s systems without advertiser intervention.

What Happens When You Migrate?

When you use the platform’s migration tool to upgrade a campaign from Display to Demand Gen, the following mechanics apply:

  • Historical Data & Learnings: Your existing campaign settings, algorithmic learnings, and conversion history transfer over seamlessly to preserve performance continuity.
  • Budget & Pacing: Your daily budget carries over automatically. (Note: Spend incurred on the exact day of migration will not be factored into the new campaign's daily pacing calculations for that specific day).
  • Default Channel Settings: Migrated campaigns will have the Google Display Network opted in by default—this cannot be unselected during the upgrade. Once the migration is complete, you can choose to expand your reach by adding YouTube, Discover, or Gmail.
  • Feature Upgrades: You immediately unlock Demand Gen’s enhanced toolset, including lookalike audience segments, carousel ad formats, expanded video integrations, and AI-powered creative tools.

Why This Matters for the South African Market

Operating in South Africa comes with distinct digital realities: budget sensitivity, fluctuating economic conditions, mobile-first browsing habits, and varying data costs. Here is how this shift impacts local paid media strategies:

1. The Collapse of the Linear Funnel

In South Africa, consumer journeys are rarely linear. A user might research a service on mobile via Google Discover, watch a review on YouTube Shorts during their commute, and finally convert after seeing a remarketing banner on a local news publisher. Consolidating Display into Demand Gen aligns your media buying with how local consumers actually behave, allowing Google's AI to optimise bids across multiple visual touchpoints simultaneously.

2. Guarding Your ZAR Against Low-Quality Traffic

One of our biggest historical challenges with standalone GDN campaigns has been controlling placement quality—stopping budgets from leaking into low-quality mobile game apps or irrelevant parked domains. Moving to Demand Gen does not make placement hygiene less important; in fact, as automated inventory expands, maintaining robust placement exclusions, app category exclusions, and strict brand safety controls will be the differentiator between a profitable campaign and wasted rand.

3. Better Audience Targeting via Lookalikes

With third-party cookies phasing out and local data privacy (POPIA) remaining paramount, first-party data is king. Demand Gen allows you to leverage Lookalike Segments built directly from your CRM lists or customer match data. For local businesses, feeding high-quality South African customer data into Demand Gen produces significantly better prospecting results than legacy broad-interest targeting.

Your Action Plan: What to Do Next

We do not recommend waiting for Google’s automated migration in 2027. Proactive account management allows you to control the testing environment and protect your ROI.

  • Audit Existing Display Performance First: Clean house before you migrate. Pause consistently underperforming asset groups, eliminate wasted spend on irrelevant placements, and verify that your conversion tracking (using updated standards like the Google AW-tag) is firing accurately.
  • Test Proactively in Batches: Do not migrate your entire account overnight. Select 1–2 stable, mid-performing Display campaigns and use the "Upgrade to Demand Gen" tool. Monitor CPA, ROAS, and lead quality closely over a 14- to 21-day learning phase before rolling it out across your primary campaigns.
  • Upgrade Your Creative Assets: Demand Gen thrives on high-quality visual storytelling. Move beyond static banners and start developing tailored video assets (especially vertical video for Shorts), engaging carousels, and high-resolution lifestyle imagery that stops the scroll.
  • Re-Verify Brand Safety Settings: After upgrading, immediately check your account-level and campaign-level exclusions. Ensure that mobile app exclusions and content suitability filters remain tightly configured to protect your brand reputation and budget.

Google’s decision to fold Display into Demand Gen marks the end of an era for standalone banner advertising, but it opens up a far more dynamic, multi-channel opportunity. By pairing Google's machine learning with rigorous, human-led strategic oversight, South African businesses can achieve broader reach, better ad engagement, and superior conversion quality. If you are unsure how this migration will affect your current Google Ads account structure, or if you want to audit your paid media strategy to ensure you are maximising your return on investment, get in touch with the specialist team at Tecbot today.
